As we had hinted earlier, Google has confirmed that they have halted all production work on Allo and will look to shut it down in March 2019.

The cross-platform messaging app was launched with a lot of hype in 2016 hasn’t seen the adoption that Google was hoping for.  This comes in the long line of products that have seen a similar fate and the latest in Google’s failures at social media.

Simplification of Google’s Messaging apps

With almost 10 different apps like Allo, Hangouts, Hangouts Dialer, Hangouts Meet, Hangouts Chat, Duo, Voice Calls, Messages, etc.,  messaging apps from Google has always been confusing and muddled.

However, this is in line with the recent push from Google to simplify its collection of apps with many featured from Allo already moved to Messages. If you have any Allo conversations, read here on how to export them.

Google will continue to the push towards Rich Communication Standard (RCS), with the consumer-focused messaging app being Messages, Duo for Video calls and Hangouts for enterprise focused customers.
